In Australia-sometimes mistaken as the land of eternal summer-the summer vacation coincides with Christmas and New Year's.The beach is awash with families sprawled on over-sized beach towels,children building sandcastles and people standing around barbeques,basking in the sun.The ocean is peppered with tanned(or sunburned)bodies,bobbing in the water like multicoloured buoys and the air is electric-buzzing with shrieks and laughter against the lowlapping of the waves.
Coming to Shanghai last summer was a vastly different experience.
Where were the beaches?To me,summer without beaches was like Chinese New Year without firecrackers.I'd never heard of t!Soon enough,I'd found a new way to appreciate the Shanghai summer that involved playing Frisbee in the park,devouring ice cream and reading books in the sun.
Summer isn't my favourite season-there are days when you feel the sun beating down on your back and the heat wrapping itself around you like a suffocating cocoon and you just want to crawl into the nearest refrigerator and shut the door until the season is over.But summer vacation is definitely one of the best times of the year-an excuse to get away from the desk,enjoy the sunshine outside and,of course,eat ice cream.
