China approved the A-H1N1 flu vaccine produced by the Beijing-based pharmaceutical company, Sinovac Biotech Ltd. (北京科兴生物制品有限公司), on September 3. The vaccine is the first in the world to get a production license.
The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA 国家食品药品监管局) issued the license for Sinovac’s vaccine called Panflu.1 (盼尔来福.1), after it had passed SFDA’ s evaluation on August 31. Panflu.1 could be given in a single dose to people aged from 3 to 60 years old.
“We have the capacity to produce 5 million doses of vaccine before October 1, and 20 million to 30 million doses in a year,” said a man from Sinovac.
Furthermore, when most people had wondered whether two doses of vaccine per person could provide enough protection against the A-H1N1 virus, Sinovac’s Panflu.1 has given an answer: just one dose is OK! And the completion of trials for Panflu.1 has shown this vaccine to be very safe.
“It looks encouraging in terms of increasing the global supply of vaccine in the near future,” said a WHO (World Health Organization 世界卫生组织) spokeswoman.
