Natural Beauty

Yongkang is steeped in history and boasts a natural beauty of gorgeous mountains. In addition to the long history and natural beauty, it also has many legends and folk stories passed down from ancient times. Among these legends is a story about Emperor Huangdi who came to Yongkang and built Dings, a type of bronze cooking vessels in ancient times. Legends also testify to the age-old local tradition: craftsmen in Yongkang manufactured metal swards in the Spring and Autumn Period, crossbows in the Han Dynasty, and bronze blunderbusses in the Tang Dynasty. The rural areas are characterized by a landscape of rivers and mountains. People hold fast to age-old beliefs and have customs and rituals from ancient times. Yongkang is known as the capital of hardware both at home and abroad. It is also a big tourist destination. At present, Yongkang boasts Fangyan Scenic Zone, a province-grade scenery attraction, and three city-level scenic attractions: White Cloud Scenic Zone, Flying Dragon Scenic Zone, and Stone City Valley Scenic Zone.

1
Fangyan Scenic Zone

Located in Yongkang and being one of key scenic zones first approved by the provincial government, Fangyan Scenic Zone is famed for natural attractions of peaks and streams in the Danxia landform. The zone covers an area of 92 square kilometers, including eight major attractions such as Fangyan Peak, Five Peaks, Southern Rocks, Stone Drum Hut, Soulful Mountain Lake, Liu Ying Martyr Mausoleum, Five-Finger Rocks, and Lake Peace.

Fangyan allures visitors with its precipitous peaks, odd-looking rock formations, waterfalls and caves. The scenery showcases a magnificent and precipitous charm, harmonizes streams and mountains, and displays the best attractions of rocks. It also displays a long history with a lot of sites of historical interest and cultural heritage. Fangyan Peak is the centerpiece of the scenic zone, famed for its magnificent and steep cliffs. Fangyan presents the best developed and most salient features of the Danxia Landforms. These features are well comparable with similar rocky features of the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian Province. Fangyan Peak towers at 400 hundred meters in height, with a circumstance of about 3,000 meters. The peak stands alone in a level ground, with perpendicular cliffs looking as if shaped by axes. The area at the top is nearly equal to the peak’s foundation. The peak resembles a huge rocky square pillar propping up the sky, hence the name, which means a square rock in Chinese. A plank road with a bridge is built to cling to the cliffs, making the climb breathtaking. At the end of the flying bridge stand two huge rocks facing each other, which looks like a gate and is known as the heavenly gate. The peak displays rich tints in the rock surface, and the large-spots on the cliffs show clear structures with goffers one layer upon another.

With services improved and tourist infrastructures developed and perfected over years, the zone offers a full range of service facilities, satisfying visitors’ needs for food, accommodation, transportation, sightseeing, shopping and recreation. Fangyan has become a preferred place of tourists to appreciate the Danxia Landform and pay homage to ancient sages who once lived there.

2
White Cloud Scenic Zone

Located in the suburbs and three kilometers away from the city proper of Yongkang, the White Cloud Scenic Zone covers an area of 15.3 square kilometers.

The natural scenery of the zone is defined by arrays of mountains and verdant forest. The Stone City Hill boasts odd-looking rocks and perpendicular cliffs. Some rock formations miraculously resemble real things in life such as a general, a stepping stone for one to get on the horseback and a frog. The clear White Cloud Lake is embedded in the mountain, an ideal spot for leisure and water sports.

The centerpiece of the White Cloud Scenic Zone, the Rock City Hill boasts a rich history and cultural heritages. Presumably, it is the very center of the culture in the southern China during the reign of Emperor Huangdi. According to the Book of Mountains and Seas, Emperor Huangdi made Dings in the Rocky City Hill where sites of his past activities can still be seen. Local people regard the emperor’s ding-making work as the very origin of the hardware industry in Yongkang.

3
Flying Dragon Scenic Zone

The zone is located in the suburbs of the city of Yongkang. Seven kilometers away from the city proper, the zone is easily accessible through a well developed road system.

The Flying Dragon Scenic Zone is marked by peaks and tall stalagmites, cascading waterfalls, and thick woods. Legend has it that Liu Xiu, the first emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty, once hid there from a massive manhunt staged by Wang Mang, prime minister of the dying Western Han Dynasty. This legend adds a cultural and historical touch to the natural beauty. For this reason, the zone is regarded as a fine example of combining natural beauty with historical heritages. It is an ideal site for leisure and sightseeing, therefore an ideal weekend resort for urban residents from Yongkang city.

4
Stone City Valley Scenic Zone

Only 1.5 kilometers away from the city proper of Yongkang, the valley is an excellent attraction for a summer visit. The urban maddening noises are gone once people reach the bottom of the valley. In the summer, camphor trees and pine trees quiver in the breeze, and keep the glaring sun away. It is also regarded as a natural place for oxygen intake.

Wufeng (Five-Peak) Academy

The Wufeng Academy is located in the Fufeng scenic spot in the Fangyan Scenic Zone. It is known for its gorgeous beauty, crisp air and quietude. It has been a preferred gathering place of scholars, painters and calligraphers since ancient times. In the southern Song Dynasty, prominent scholars such as Chen Liang, Zhu Xi and Lu Donglai wrote their books and developed their theoretical systems in the academy. Though known as Wufeng Academy collectively, the name is actually shared by separate academies scattered among the area where five peaks stand. These academics are the Chong Building, the Lize Temple, the Xueyi Library, and the Wufeng Academy.

The Wufeng Academy is structure built in a natural rocky cave. The academy leans against the northern cliff and faces the south. The academy has three front doors side by side located in a square area. The cave is 12.75 meter wide and 11.3 meters deep, covering an area of 175 square meters. The academy is a two-story structure, with 18 round pillars inside, each being 37 centimeters in diameter. The pillar bases are of the architectural style of the Ming Dynasty. Despite all the years of ups and downs, the academy is still very sturdy due to the protection and support provided by the cave.

Master Xu’s Memorial Temple

The temple is an ancient structure typical of the Chinese national style and local features. One of Yongkang’s best preserved memorial temples built in the Qing Dynasty, the temple is located in the Wuyi Lane in the city proper of Yongkang. The extensive temple encompasses 1,512 square meters. The temple is composed of the front, central and back halls, with each hall having five front doors side by side. The three rooms in each hall have lifted beams. The central door of the front hall is a structure of three-story archway. The wall is made of water-rubbed blue bricks. There are two oblong horizontal tablets, framed with patterns of lotus flowers and grapes. On the side of the fake door on each side of the front wall is a stone sculpture carved with four Chinese characters of Qin and Chess, Painting and Calligraphy, traditional arts for scholars in ancient China. The wall on the either side of the front door has three layers of walls and flowers. The top of the wall has dribbles made of eave tiles. The fa?ade looks magnificent and grandiose in a fine workmanship. The purlins on front and back eave columns in the front and central halls are carved with patterns of human figures, birds, animals, and flowers.

West Ford Bridge

Located in the southwestern part of the city of Yongkang, the West Ford Bridge crosses the Yongkang River, like a dragon sleeping on the waves. The bridge is one of the best tourist attractions in the city proper. According to the Yongkang County Annals, the West Ford Bridge was constructed in 1718, the fifty-seven years of the Kangxi Period of the Qing Dynasty. In the first year of the Yongzheng Period, the bridge was renovated from the wood structure to stone piers on which a corridor bridge was erected. And the corridor bridge later underwent several renovations over years. Now the West Ford Bridge enjoys a national reputation as the longest corridor bridge in China.

The bridge is 166 meters long and 4 meters wide. It has 12 piers and 13 spans. Before it was reconstructed, the bridge measured 206.3 meters in length sitting on 15 piers with 16 spans. The piers are higher than the banks, thus enabling boats to sail through from under.

On the stone piers are wooden beams, which are covered by the wood floor. On the floor are 58 bridge rooms. In the center of the bridge is a pavilion with a double eave roof. The roof is constructed in a way that wind and rain cannot invade. On either side of the pavilion are wood windows, from which people can look into the distance. Between bridge columns are seats for pedestrians to sit. The unique thing about the West Ford Bridge is that it curls like a bow in the direction of the upper stream. The unorthodox design of the curled bridge enables people to have a panoramic view. This design rebels against the traditional bridge engineering concept that a bridge must be straight no matter how a river zigzags. This idea adds an extraordinary appeal to the bridge.

The Dragon-Tiger Pagoda and the Phoenix Pagoda

The sites of the two pagodas are situated to the western of the city of Yongkang. According to historical records, the two pagodas were first erected in the Five Dynasty Period (907-960AD). The Dragon-Tiger Pagoda collapsed towards the end of the Qing Dynasty. The Phoenix Pagoda, which was ruined in the Ming Dynasty, was rebuilt. However, it was ruined again in 1932. The two sites can still be seen today.

The Dragon-Tiger Pagoda was generally called the Upper Pagoda. It stood on the top of the Snake Hill near the Qianshantou Village to the west of the city. The pagoda overlooked the river and stood face to face with the Phoenix Pagoda across the river. The twin pagodas resembled a lock. The 7-storied pagoda stood on the block-stone basis which covered area of 150-180 square meters. The brick pagoda had a stairway inside leading to the top. The panorama from the pagoda top was breathtaking: the river was flanked by hills, and the river vanished into the horizon and became one with the sky above. Beside the pagoda stood a Buddhist temple, entitled Upper Pagoda Temple. Now two buildings of the ancient temple still stand and the pillars have blue dragons engraved in relief. The stone sculpture displays a fine workmanship and is very valuable. Eastern to the pagoda site is a cliff on which are three Chinese characters: Dragon-Tiger Hill, handwritten by Wu Tingkang, a local magistrate of the Qing Dynasty.

The Pearl Pagoda was generally known as the Pagoda, located on the top of the Turtle Hill eastern of Xikou Village in the southern part of the city proper. The hill faces the east and the river. To the south is the small-sized Nanyuan plain, and to the west stretches an anti-flood dike and a belt of trees, and to the north is the Yongkang River. The hill looks like a magic turtle, swimming against the tide with something on its back. The hill displays gentle and open slopes, with trees and farming fields stretching in the distance. Eastern of the pagoda are a Buddhist temple and a nunnery, respectively entitled Pugao Nunnery and Dragon King Temple. There is a building of Buddhist Sutras in the nunnery.

The two pagodas used to be venues for sightseeing, cultural activities, and religious rites.

The Deqing Temple, an ancient Buddhist sanctuary sitting in the depth of the mountains, is built inside a spacious cave. Towering pine trees and bamboos flank a zigzagging path leading to the entrance of the cave and the temple. The area around the temple is famed for extraordinary natural beauty.
