In CE surveys respondents are questioned about a sample of hypothetical “packages” of attributes that reflect different combinations of characteristics, in a way that elicits the choices as if they had been made in a “real” context. Correspondingly, CE seems appropriate with regard to valuation of changes arising from forest management practices. This is the case partly because the precise results of the changes are highly uncertain and partly because forest recreation is a complex“good” constituted of multiple characteristics. This is in accordance with Lancaster (1966), who stated that the consumer does not derive utility from a good itself, but from the different characteristics that altogether constitute the good.
