Obviously, people have different preferences and dislikes, which emphasizes the importance for forest managers to be familiar with people’s perceptions, preferences and demands, and to consider the recreational merit of their decisions (Jensen, 1999; Lindhagen, 1996;Rydberg and Falck, 2000; Silvennoinen et al., 2001; Schaaf et
al., in press).With this in mind, the ongoing transformation from even-aged management towards nature-based management taking place across Europe (Gamborg and Larsen, 2003) calls for insight into public preferences regarding vegetation structures likely to develop in forest stands subjected to nature-based management (Rydberg and Falck, 2000; Karjalainen and Tyrv¨ainen,2002). However, thorough and up-to-date knowledge about this topic is currently lacking.
A shift to more nature-based forest management will have major impacts on the visual appearance of forest stands and thereby greatly influence a forest’s recreational values as these are highly dependent on the visual appearance of the forest (Ribe,1989; Bell, 2001a, 2001b).
